... On Urban Assault Vehicles? America Needs To Know
I find myself strangely fixated on the design features of this.

What do we got? What do we got? We got one heavily armed recreational vehicle!

I’d forgotten it was based on a GMC. But, there it is...
The front drive engine configuration was actually pretty awesome. It’s a weird historical blip that it was based on the Eldorado/Toronado TH transmissions for FWD... And since it went out of production there appears to be no modern day equivalent. By reports the GMC motorhome guys (of which an amazing %% are still on the road. Astonishing, in fact.) now have to struggle to find driveline parts.

Such an advanced design that it didn’t look too dated (other than color schemes) 20 years later. Every now and then GM has a fit of genius.

Wait..that’s FWD? Damn!

TH425 like out of Toro IIRC. Somewhere I saw a pic of the monster chain drive they used to reverse power flow

Strangely, that whole ‘66 Toronado platform was amazingly forward looking. I think the 455 and TH425 transmission got used even in commercial buses and shuttles. The internals were basically the indestructible PowerGlides the drag racers could blast 2000HP through.
So, it was a tough set-up that’s getting harder to support these days.

Sweet vintage look inside, too.

That dashboard looks like my childhood.

Urban Suburban Assault Vehicles will take their place.

Yep. It allowed for a much lower floor, and relatively good handling ... For a big RV anyways.

My school, which focuses on digital arts and creative media (film, TV, and writing min my case) actually converted one of these into a sound studio called “The Dream Machine”
It’s odd how crappy a lot of the pictures are, but inside you can mix sound with a lovely, 80s sound board. I’ll never know how to work it, but I respect anyone who does.
And for anyone who likes planes, my school mascot is a Douglas DC-3 because they’re awesome.
I miss being on campus...

Somewhere there’s a video of it running a slalom course... which was remarkably more stable than a same vintage video of an Olds 98 running Motorweeks’ slalom course.

Wow. That’s incredible! Thanks for posting. I love re-purposing projects into something better like that.

It is super neat, thought there’s nothing wrong with the retro interior fitted in these...
Sheesh, now I want an RV. Though, probably nothing more than a Toyota Chin ook or some small, C-Class camper.

It’s weighing on me, too. I keep eye-ballin’ Revcons, too. The quality of the interior finishes on those was like amazing... They look dated, but the cabinets were some special material that literally doesn’t wear. It’s spooky.

Vintage style for sure, a bit big for my tastes (and budget), but still absolutely radical!

About five or six years ago, I was looking to buy a camper. I bought a 21' hybrid trailer for $4600. At the time, for maybe a grand more, I could have bought a pretty nice one of these GMC motorhomes. I wish I had, because now you can't touch a decent one for under $10k.

Yeah, it’s amazing how “loved” these ancient GMC RVs are today. An amazing percentage of them are still on the road.
Try to find that much love for a Winnebago from 1974.

I think it’s because these were so unique. To this day there is no class A RV with a floor that low, that handles that well.

It still looks like GM used Revcon as a Stalking Horse... and got market research of great value. (Clark also did an earlier, cruder, FWD layout but it was nowhere as sweet)
Oddly, I guess it was a business GM couldn’t make money in, because they only last three years, but they do appear to have knocked it out of the park. Even as a child I remember parents discussing RVs... and the GMC was held in great reverence.
